An ancient shrine in my town. Records naming the shrine date from the 10th century, although it's undoubtedly been in existence in some form for much longer. Fujino's entire area was settled by neolithic hunter-gatherers (Jomon people) for thousands of years (pottery shards are regularly uncovered by farmers). This shot is my first raw conversion attempt, using RSE. I have to admit I'm kind of amazed at what can be done with the raw data. Due to the wide dynamic range involved, I underexposed by several steps, enough to save the sky and roof edge highlights, then opened up the shadows with RSE.

Yes, RAW does amaze me with what can be achieved. You found the key right away... expose for the highlights and process for the shadows. I wish there were a bit more contrast in the mid tones, especially in the green areas. I struggle with contrast in the greens too. Don't know why, but I seem to struggle getting separation in greens.

Nicely done and thanks for the background. I also expose for the highlights and bring up the shadows using raw.

I always shot a little underexposed (not always my choice) my problem shooting this way is that you can bring up the shadows but sometimes the noise also comes up. I used to shot with a c8080 and I always shot with jpeg (even hq) but with the E1 I'm not confident enough to shot in other than in raw.

Thanks Ed and Frank. Ed, I'll have to work on those midtones; I've heard criticism of Rawshooter from some regarding color rendition, then others have said it's fine. I'm still experimenting, and my only point of comparison at this point is Olympus Master, --and it is a total mess, IMO. Each incremental development operation takes about 5 seconds to complete on my computer, while Rawshooter reacts instantly to the slider movements -- plus, RSE has many more adjustments and much greater latitude within each adjustment. I tried developing the same frame using Master and couldn't get more than 1/3 the shadow data produced by RSE. Carles, I agree about the noise issue when bringing up shadows; I've just sent in for the Pro edition of Neatimage so it will handle the Tiffs produced by RSE. That should help. Slowly but surely, I'm figuring things out, I hope.
