Well seen, Chris.
Great control of a high contrast subject. Very nice texture, colour, and composition. Intriguing as to what the cavity is; where it leads to.

A wonderful composition with really interesting patterns and textures. Well exposed in difficult light. I like the placement of the gap to the left. The blackness within is mysterious and the contrast both in terms of its blackness and blankness with the light and textures outside is simply beautiful.

Thanks guys.
John this is part of the Gatehouse at Dunstanburgh castle, south of Bamburgh and about a mile and a half north of the tiny port of Craster (famous for its kippers).
I've seen some wind eroded sandstone in my time, but the wall near this window is amazing. Apparently the castle was built in the 14th centuary so I guess they could tell modern builders a thing or to about mortar!
I might post more of the wall later but I thought people might find this compo more interesting. I did think somebody might complain about not showing the full slot of the window, but the shot is really about the stone.
Rob, I think the window was designed to shoot a bow 'n' arrow from. There is a long narrow slot that extends above and below.

Well composed and an interesting subject. One wonders if some of the sandstone's "weathering" may have been helped along by arrows directed at the window!

Vermicular
I like the vermicular appearence of the stone and the contrast between the bright sgtone and the dark interior is great.
Well seen, well taken, thanks.
