Still playing with shots from last week: this time a nuanced version of a seascape.
Frank remarked on a previous post, and rightly so, that the sky was a bit bland. I've used a couple of extra layers of sky in this one with blend mode set to colour dodge to squeeze some mood from it that complements the action in the water. Have I succeeded???

For those interested, here are links to the other three shots in the series of my recent posts.

Tomorrow I will post an international collaborative effort! Stay tuned.

Rob, IMHO your coulour pictures of the waves are a lot more interesting than the BW versions.

It is something about the freshness and taste of salt that simply is lost in the conversion.

Your "wave photos" are an inspiration, and I want to try some for myself. Too bad the e-300 isnt splashproof :-)

Yes

The sky has more form and I like contrast in this.

Hi Rob,

for me the version 3.1 is the best b/w-version up to now. Sky, waves and the rocks are well processed, good contrasted and have a better impact to the viewer.

Bit I also like the coloured version with the nice greens in the waves.

All the best, Jochen

I agree that this is the best black & white version. You did a fine job with the sky Rob.

another excellent waves shot; very contrasty, very well converted to b+w

gorgeous

Rob..once again a beautifully lit capture. I spent most of my early life in the ocean...it is both a cleanser and a killer. I like the offshore breeze holding up the curls, and spraying along with the churn and froth of the breaks. Great time of day as well....looks great in b/w, and in color...only the b/w has a "time dating" effect to me. Say what they will about "landscape cameras"...the E-1 seems to do nicely here....nice work.

Excellent

In my opinion only, this picture is sensational.

Timing, toning, and many in this picture are just right.

Well done.

Cheers

;-)

To my kind critics

  • Pascal - Merci beaucoup (I did a little (a little) French at school.
  • Jakob - I'm ambivalent about colour Vs b&w. Sme shots just work better in colour and vice versa. This one works both ways. I may post the colour one some time.
  • Peter - Thank you. I think the sky 'belongs' now. It is the original sky, just processed to make it look its best.
  • Jochen - Thanks. I think this is close to the best, if not the best, conversion I've done so far.
  • Frank - Pleased you like it and approve of the sky.
  • dee vee - Thanks. It certainly has more zing than the earlier one, and it's not just the sky doing it. The extra contrast has lifted it too, IMO.
  • Doug - I can truly feel your empathy with the sea in your words. Yes, I am so impressed with what the E-1's 5 megapixels are capable of. But 8-12 in an E-2 would interest me hugely. :-)
  • Steen - Thank you. I saw your comment elsewhere about it being hard work to be a regular MFT contributor. Tell me about it! Don't burn yourself out. I did for a while.
  • Lexusman - Thanks for stopping by. I have decided to get a 20x16 of this for a wall.
