Gave this a slight tweak on curves, then a "look see" what it looked like as a duotone; which just happened to be on this shade of blue from a previous experiment. So I thought I must leave it like that (for now at least) and see if it catches Edwin's eye. :0)

No, how could I notice? ;-)

So, what are your thoughts on... blue?

LOL I've just finished trying to trace back through Andrews story board, but I didn't get very far as there was so much interesting reading. However I did get to a bit where you were complaining about a blue tint which was puzzling on two counts. One his image didn't have a blue tint. Two, I was mindful of two images of yours I'd seen recently, one of a cat (looking away) the other of some Japanese Maple leaves in your back yard and by the titles seemed to be part of a series, blue in fact.

But then I read on ....

Incidentally in both of said images I seem to remember my initial reaction was that the blue made them look horrible, but didn't have the balls to say so!

But that's as near as your going to get to an answer right now, cos it's now 3am here and I should have been in bed hours ago!

Hi Chris, the one of mine with the mirrors was originally in blue...an error without question. Then challenged Edwin to confront his distaste for blueness, hence....

I think this one looks OK, probably better than in straight B&W, but there again I may have preferred colour. You must qquite like this too really. No?

The blue tone creates a sense of cold and calm (utterly unoriginal thing to say, but true) and makes it impressionistic in style. I think that for an appropriate subject, this toning, or hue works well, and this subject is appropriate.

As for the picture itself, I like it. There is a ghostly element to this which is well conveyed or emphasised by the blue tint. Compositionally it looks pretty good too, but I wonder about a portrait mode shot including only the left boat and sun/reflection...The only reason I suggest that is the overlapping masts to the far right which create a sense of clutter in an otherwise beautifully simple scene.

Best wishes- Andy

what a waste!

just kidding, chris. its just that the image has such potential and IMHO the blue is just too highly saturated and too consistent throughout to be realistic. color is definately an option, i would like to see something more along the lines of you first image, but i wouldn't rule out a rich B&W conversion either. a potentially foreboding shot with the fog rolling in over the boats...just a thought.

best, john

Andy is right! For some further thoughts on the portfolio of blue, see my Blue folder.

As a side note, I am glad (I think) that you think they look "horrible". But you should see them in avacado green! Guacamoletype prints look even worse. LOL

Ok, Edwin...I also want to see four green tinted prints too!

Comming back to this Chris, I do think that the blue is too, err purple. Perhaps a much darker blue tint would improve things?

Best wishes- Andy

Nice capture but I wonder whether it might benefit from further cropping into the boats, and also a little more contrast to make that fog really, really ominous. If you're going for cold, you might as well go for scarily sinister too! Agree with the above about the reflection of the sun, too, which is a little distracting to my eye.

To me, lighten up the blue and a little more contrast with a little clip off the bottom. But that's what I would do.

Even so, I like it very much.

I like the composition and the mist. I am not sure about the blue/purple, but I do like it.
