Thanks for that Neil. Yes I see what you're saying and it's very reasonable in the circumstances. This is a bar in Dublin that is known as The Gravediggers. This is so because it is adjacent to Glasnevin Cemetry which is one of the biggest graveyards in Ireland. A long long time ago when graves were dug by shovel and spade, the diggers would knock on the gable wall at lunchtime for their pints and hence it got it's nickname. It's real name is Josie Kavanagh's. In the old part of the bar, a number of movie companies have paid a fee to the owners to keep it exactly as it is so as they can use it for whatever. It hasnt been renovated painted decorated etc etc in centuries. Its a busy bar and one doesn't often get to shoot what one wants. I saw the the shot and whipped the old cam up and out and shot! I will probably go back and shoot a few more there if I can find a quieter time with a few willing sitters! Thanks again.

David,
That's a very interesting point about dodging. Now why didn't I think of that?! Great suggestion and will work on this after brunch, seeing as it is pouring rain outside. Thanks for the feedback also about the frame. Cheers.

You created an excellent sense of the atmosphere here Eugene. Besides the fact that I like these old bars, and from your descruption I understand that it's a special one, I like the way you give a sense of timelessness in your photo. Well done!

Very good shot and conversion, Eugene. It is very dark, but you hit it - I am able to see what I need. Also like the accurate DOF and used square format, BW and properly chosen square format is a killer combo for me. I wish to see the left glass pushed little bit to right.
It looks like sad end of day, all of friends at home already, pub is silent, bartender don't want to hear your stories ... Guinness is really dark beer :)

Empty
Eugene, this one feels a little empty to me and it's only because that glass on the left is so cramped against the frame, as if it's making way for something more important to take up that left golden mean area. But there's nothing there. So, I'm with Jan in wanting that glass to be more to the right. It doesn't have to be much...just enough to diminish the (unnecessary) crampedness (a word?) I like the conversion, the low key and the deep sepia tone. The minimal highlights in the image lift it enough IMO. The fade out from dimly lit to black in the BG is very moody.
I'm open minded about frames. Done well they add to a picture's appeal. This one works fine because it supports the minimal highlights in the image, amplifying their contribution. It also works well as an interface between the image and the MFT BG.
