Just the right

mix of motion blur and sharp rocks, just the right mix of blacks and whites, just the right composition, just a great feel for the power of the waves and the solidity of the rocks, just................................great.

excellent quality of depth. movement of overflowing water resembles that used in painting, as if being done by paint brush.

Perfect Rob, the square format works well, SS was right on for blur, tones of conversion are good, a visually pleasing photograph where you can feel the motion of the water. Well done!

Yes, I like it very much. How many did you shoot before you captured this perfect one? Is this one image cropped or layered? Not that it matters artistically. But technically it is always nice to know.

A classic. Stunning. I am lost for words. It's classic example of what I regard as fine art photography. All the elements combine together here to convey the awesome power of nature. One can almost feel the wind and waves bursting to get through the monitor screen. Great one indeed.

It's a strange quirk of the HRI system that sees this image, which as I write has 15 straight HOF nominations in the space of 6hrs, replaced by another image that has only one!

Chris Cooke HoF ¤1 at 13:47 EDT on 2006-Apr-10 [Reply]

Actually, I like that aspect of the HRI.... it should make folk engage with the picture and compare one with another....

I saw this at work and have been admiring it all day Rob. Nothing to add to what has been said before.....quite simply, this is superb.

Best wishes- Andy

I agree 100% with Chris; the formula should be changed to a different one that takes into to the account the number of 10s as well; it should be vary simple to impliment and I hope Alan and Marion would act on it.

In this article has been discussed already the matter with HRI. If you don´t like it, rate it down (as already has been).

Kind regards,

Very nice. Haven't got anything to add to what others already have said except that this reminds me very much of drawings we used to see in old novels about the hardship living by the coast (sort of national romantic novels).

Sheeesh Rob. Agree this deserves all praise it's getting, I just put a customer on hold to sit an examine it a some more. As stated lots of power...gives me a different sort of feeling than normally felt by images. I don't think it's common to look at a still image and feel exhilarated. Very dynamic and very strong presentation. Excellent work. -JP

WOW! Im overwhelmed with the response to this.

I will reply properly later - when time permits - to all of your generous comments. One thing though, just quickly, I like the HRI method as it stands! Honestly. If this sits here for days and other worthy shots don't get a look in I think that's not really a good thing for the site. It's good that the next new 10 that comes along will get some spotlight. This will get its share of attention through the highest commented column anyway. Thanks everyone.

Prepare for a stream of thank you's

Once again, thank you to evryone who has given this image some time. All of your comments are greatly appreciated, and I feel honoured that so many fine photographers are giving this one a rap.

  • Rex – thanks for getting this one off to a flying start! I was surprised to check on this before going to bed (it was posted quite late) and discover it already had four tens.
  • Denis, Martin, Edwin, and Salim - thanks for the rapid fire thumbs ups.
  • John – I played with a few shutter speeds to get one that looked good. Well as good as it can look in the preview monitor while on location!
  • Robert, Monica, and Michael - thank you so much.
  • Doro – this day our coast was copping the fallout from a cyclone that battered northern Queensland some 1500km away.
  • HK – I always shoot a lot. With moving subjects you need to because there’s such an element of luck involved to get something special. It’s a minimal crop of the 4:3 frame. I was able to zoom in with the 50-200. The action was about 60 metres away.
  • Vaggelis and Horst – thank you. Vaggelis, with great respect, please see my response to Chris Re: HRI appearances.
  • Chris – A wonderful compliment and I guess tongue in cheek. Cut off dates are cut off dates. There will be other books I hope. Re: HRI, I do appreciate the support in your sentiment, and don’t wish to seem ungrateful. My attitude to the HRI spotlight is that I like to see it shared around as it is now. Otherwise some wonderful images could pass under the radar. The higher the posting volumes on the site, the greater the danger that worthy pictures might get little airplay.
  • Jan – so succinct! 
  • Andy – no bird in its right mind…….Thanks man.
  • Eugene - …………I am humbled. That you think this is a fine art photograph is a badge of honour for me.
  • Andy – Agree with you about HRI. Thanks for the accolade.
  • Caroline, DV and William – thank you as well.
  • JP – never keep the customers waiting! ‘Exhilarated’ High praise. Thank you.
  • John – thank you. As always, some luck involved and I’m happy I was there to catch it.

Rob,

I'm just back from a week vacation and I see this at the top of the highest commented list with 37! The motion portrayed here is powerful. I think the area at the top right is brilliant in its inclusion and the amount of it included. That area of relative stillness is a great compliment to the motion in the remainder of the image.

  • Martin - I'm honoured that this is your first 10 in some time. Any photo of mine that makes people go WOW!!! is ectra special to me. :-)
  • Valter - Thank you so much for that enthusiastic description!
  • Eugene - I'm honoured again that you thought enough of this one to come back and say so again. It really does mean a lot to me.
  • David and Brad - thanks for your comments and ratings also. Brad, a special thanks for your comment about the quieter area in top right. It hadn't really struck me before and now that you've mentioned it, it's something I'll appreciate each time I look at this on the wall.

Thank you everyone...

...for your kind words and appreciation of this photograph. I'm catching up on some unfinished business here as I've been very inactive (comatose!) on the site for months.

Horst, Vaggelis, Jan, Adrian, Elisabeth and Brad, your encouragement means a lot to me. Since taking a break from MFT I've been very busy and find myself devoting a lot of time to other things (photography in my day job and develoments in a private business). I will be back at MFT in the future if there is some good news at Photokina! Take care, all of you.
