Another puddle and obliged by two birds. It's very hard to get an interesting take on the Eiffel Tower as it has been done to death. Still, a marvellous tower and a great engineering feat. You wouldn't believe the amount of tidying up I had to do with this one. Honestly, the amount of rubbish that people throw away. I know. Some of you will be disappointed that the puddle doesn't go all the way to the edge of the frame. :-)

Effeil Towel is still alive and well in the puddle! Love it.

oops

Hit enter too fast. I love that the puddle doesn't cover the whole ground. And yes, I recognized the tower before reading your description, but it looks GREAT here. The birds did a great job posing for you too. I love it.

You´ve really done it ....

(I mean taken the big bottle to Eiffel Tower :-)))

You have achieved a complete outstanding success with this picture. Not a postcard view, but a really well done symbol that gives a perfect mood for this town. Like it very much.

Best wishes,

Eugene, on this shot you used your eyes and brain best way you could. It has lot of dimensions, touch of surreal there and not easy to read it. There is nothing I could miss, it has the right level of complexity and the conversion is perfect.

I am just not sure in case of frame, if it should be wider it will give me the needed feeling of classic BW photo, which this really is.

Your shot is great compliment to famous French photographers of past and in my eyes definitely one of your best shots!

Thanks a million for your very kind comments. This has put me in an even better mood on the way out the door to meet my mates for a few pints of Guinness :-) Cheers!

Jan,

Sorry meant to also say that yes I have this debate in my head about the frame and I have a fear of going too big - so thanks for your comment there.

Certainly worth the effort.

One of the easiest 10's I've given.

Makes my heart soar

Couldn't stop watching it. I am getting happier as I watch it. I am going out to 1. hug some people; 2. have some Guinness (my favorite beer); and 3. Do some Irish dancing. (Ya I know. I am Asian. But I know Irish dance pretty well.) I have a feeling that I will give out (relatively) less 10 from now on.

It's not perfect. That would have been one of the pigeons making amorous advance to the other one!

I trust you took your empty bottles of water away with you.

Hi Eugene ......simply great , having seen so many shots of this Parisien icon this one certainly stands out ......enough visual information to identify the tower , but not too much to make it just another shot of one of the worlds most photographed structures . I'm so glad the puddle does'nt go to the edge ...I like the grounding effect it has as is....the pigeons are the icing on the cake , although I consider Pigeons to be the cockroachs of the sky they cannot be ignored in any major city ( I hope I have not offended any Pigeon fanciers out there :) ).

This to me is one of your best shots ....be proud .

....and I can see where Jan is coming from , maybe just a tad bigger in the frame ?

another comment in this block...

as follows is that I appreciate the artistic composure of the image. It really is a very nice work. I have never been to paris so that i could say Yes/No for the atmosphere description throughout the radiation of this photo. I am statisfied all in all :=)

This is a real classic! The conversion 'style' makes this composition stand out from other images of a much photographed city.

great pupple shot. love the grainy look of the lower part and the sharp pigeons. indeed quite different to most (all?) ordinary eiffel tower images. its just that the puddle doesn't go all the way to the edge of the frame.

Judged entirely on its own merits this is a great shot. The composition & square crop is very effective with the curved line leading the eye through the image. The dark portion in the bottom is kept interesting with the texture, while the pigeons provide the essential extra element, the icing on the cake.

Adding to that, you have captured such a well known and often photograph landmark in a new and orginal manner. The small portion of the tower captured in the reflection is just enough to be recognisable and to show a portion of the intricate detail of the structure.

Great shot Eugene.

Stalking

Well... it's me again. I have become the stalker of this image... Like Denis, I would like this one printed too. And I need you to sign it. When my friends see this image on my wall I will feel so proud that I actually know someone who can do this.

Jyh-Lurn Chang HoF Win ¤1 at 00:27 EDT on 2006-May-09 [Reply]

So well done, Eugene.

A very strong image because not only because of what you have chosen to include and exclude but also because of the stylish tilt. It makes one study it even closer and that lingering reveals all the more. Well done with the litter campaign.

Hi Eugene,

I have enjoyed your Paris series dremendously and I have commented and rated everysingle one of them - in my opinion one of your very best series. Every single photo in the series is a jewel; this one is the "Crown Jewel" or, as they say in Paris, "creme de la creme" ......(why am I so late in commenting? I thought I already had!)

Rob; Thanks for your comments which I always appreciate. Cheers!

Doro; thanks to you also. Yes I know what you mean about the pigeons:-) They served me well here though!

No worries Vaggelis. I appreciate you commenting here.

Thanks again to you all.

The reflection alone is excellent. The pigeons make it a 10

Eugene

I missed this one first time around. Can only echo all the enthusiastic comments already made. Would want to emphasis though that what makes this special (apart from the compo and conversion) is that you have made a fresh and new image of an iconic subject which, as you say, has already been done to death. Quite a feat. I really like the slightly grainy feel to it, and unlike one of the commentators above I think it would make an excellent card. As many others have said before, this is one of your best. Well done!

Eugene, this is my first day back in many weeks, and I was very happy to see that your image was chosen for the HOF. Congratulations! I must have missed this one when I was absent for some weeks in May. It is certainly deserving and I wish I could say I had a hand in getting this into the HOF.

The things I like best about this image are the texture showing through the reflection (hard to articulate why, but I love the grainy look); the wonderful placement of the birds in that oval of light, and especially the reflection of the lower one; and the way the photograph makes me think of looking down at the birds but also up at the tower at the very same time. It is fascinating to me to think of the tower being flattened into such a 2-dimensional representation--sort of Escheresque in a weird sort of way. And for some reason I have to smile when I think of the birds being completely oblivious to their part in this very striking image. An amazing shot all the way around.
