Competition suggestion: PavementI saw a group called “Pavement” on Flickr and thought pavement pictures could be a nice competition for MFT. By ‘pavement’ I think of pavement (British)/sidewalk (US), but also roads, streets and squares (people can walk on or cars drive/park on). Could be of any material; Concrete, asphalt, wood, granite, marble, metal, glass, sand….. etc. The pavement should be the main subject of the picture, and should not be confused with the genre ‘street photography’. I think, but I’m not sure, that it would have to involve pointing the camera downwards. Some example pictures from Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/b_g/180986800/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/stevestr/229507914/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/zen/225170802/in/pool-pavement/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/fmphoto/197998291/in/pool-pavement/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/jelens/211842468/in/pool-pavement/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/m00k/180706086/in/pool-pavement/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/zwigmar/57304240/in/pool-pavement/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/dcreeves2000/166822512/in/pool-pavement/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/waltersobchak/135212283/in/pool-pavement/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/ffgoatee/68720957/in/pool-pavement/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/tarjankuvat/245374547/in/pool-pavement/Two examples I would not regard as pavement pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lomodachi/100770517/in/pool-pavement/ (street photography) http://www.flickr.com/photos/alving/105953252/in/pool-pavement/ (portrait of a bird – the pavement is just a background)I would accept a pavement completely covered with snow, leaves or a poodle with reflection as long as it was possible to see that it was a pavement because those are ‘natural’ things one can find on pavements. But I would not accept a picture where the main subject would be of an item somebody has lost or left on the pavement. What do think? Could this be a theme for a competition? And if yes, how could we formulate rules wide enough for being creative, but narrow enough to avoid pictures like the two examples above? |

I'm still wating for your excellent idea re 'football' !!

I am not thrilled by this idea, nor do I find it inspiring. But I am up for the challenge.
Personally I would like to see a competition even more restricting to truly challenge members. "One Egg" comes to mind. Chicken, any bird, frog, human, cooked, raw, in or out of the shell. Not two or multiple eggs... one egg, period.
I thought the July 2006 - World of Sport competition was A&M's version of Caroline's football suggestion. Not everyone has access to a football game (or Soccar in the US) so a sports theme was the compromise using her idea as inspiration. Plus, it might not be football season in the Souther Hemisphere when it is in season in the north. Well, whatever...

to create an interesting photograph of just one ordinary subject like
an egg (for example, available for everybody) would be a real challenge.
but probably there would be only a few submissions.
guess most will rarely find egg images in their archives *LOL* I've a few ;)
so participants would need to shoot some...
potatoe, apple, cucumber etc. is also imaginable.
or lock yourself in your bathroom and take an great image. or two. seriously.

I am glad you agree Michael. With a very restrictive common abject we are all familiar with, creativity is required for light, location and to come up with a new idea. I think that is good... :-)

Not meaning to be argumentative ;-)
But !
Carolines idea was not so much about league football etc etc but rather using the game/activity of football to illustrate it and the people therein in a social context. People with a ball in a context..... In that regard it doesnt matter about leagues etc etc etc. I thought the sports one was ok but a rather weakish comprimise and not as interesting as Carolines original idea, which I thought was one of the better ideas that was suggested here for a competition which unfortunately wasnt taken up.
The idea of an egg or whatever is fine by me but dont count your chickens until they're hatched ;-)

.*sniff, sniff* I had hoped you would be full enthusiasm and joy and go out starting to make pavement pictures even before breakfast. Eager to capture light and shadows, wonderful geometrical patterns, textures, lines, curves….sad, mysterious, threatening, cheerful, funny…and all members would take part as there are pavements/sidewalks and roads all over the globe. ;-D
And the results would have been some of the dullest pictures ever posted on MFT and some very creative ones. All in all not very different from what I guess will happen if Egg is a competition theme. :-) So yes, I’m in favour of Egg as a theme (though I would enjoy making pavement pictures more). I only hope that it will be clear that it has to be real/natural eggs and preferably only white eggs allowed. I sure hope depictions of Faberge eggs and East Europen painted Easter eggs will be banned from the competition.
I also thought of “World of Sport” as a version of my “football” suggestion. That competition (World of Sport) was, as I see it, open for making “social context pictures”, but most seemed to prefer making ordinary sports/actions pictures. I think that would have happened to a “football” competition as well – no matter how explicitly it had been said that it should not be about sports/action, but about “social context”.
Talking about competition themes; I hope Andy’s (McLean) suggestion about human emotions haven been forgotten.

Well then Caroline !!
I see we have taken a few STEPS in the right direction and that with your leading the WAY, we are now on the right PATH for this competition, which has all the potential for a lot of SOLE. This idea of yours now PAVES the WAY for a most interesting competition that may well be STREETS ahead of others in terms of originality. Your clarifications re the rules for such will make good SIGNPOSTS for all to participate, so as no one may take a WRONG TURN at the CROSSROADS of choice. Let no enthusiasm be KERBED. On with the show!!

Eugene: :-D
Edwin: Aha – now I know why you are not keen on pavement pictures. ;-)
Doro: Nice collage.
JonPaul: Does it have to be my own bathroom? I’m afraid it is so small that I won’t be able squeeze both E-1 and myself in. Hmm – maybe if I remove the battery grip. :-D

It was a good idea then.
And it is still a good idea. Perhaps this subject should become the next new competition in Caroline's honor.

One of Caroline's greatest influences on me was the fact that she taught me to look down, and to find and appreciate the beauty at our feet. I can't think of pavement photos without thinking of Caroline and smiling. A couple of her pavement/reflection images are among my favorite images from anytime or anywhere. I think a pavement competition would be great, and a lovely tribute to Caroline.

We do need something in her honour (somekind of yearly "award" would be nice) but this would be a great start. I'm all for it.
I once told her I had a great image in my head of a coach load of Japanese tourists, that had just disembarked of a tour coach, that were all clicking away at some must see tourist icon, but there would be Caroline pointing her camera down to the floor.

Maybe Alan & Mario can get Olympus to donate a camera body or lens, or some piece of Olympus equipment as an annual prize to be given in her name? I know she was generous and would give things to those she felt were deserving.

Bringing it to the top!
If I remember right, Caroline won a camera here from Olympus. If I remember right again it was an E-500, and she donated it back to be given to somebody else that needed it more than she did. (A truly selfless act, an act of an Angel.)
I would hope that Alen & Mario would read this, realize what a great contribution Caroline made to this site, know how selfless she was in her actions and generosity, and lobby Olympus to donate a yearly prize, in her name and in her honor, to be awarded to some gifted individual here.E. Edwin Ennor ~ (E³) HoF Win ♥ ¤ $ at 11:37 EDT on 2008-Jul-24 [Reply]
Great Idea!
We'll try to hit Olympus to sponsor such a competition commemorating Caroline's spirit on the site. It may be a long shot to get a yearly commitment but we ourselves can ensure a yearly competition pays homage to her.

Caroline's re-donation
I nearly brought up the subject of Caroline giving up her prize of the camera before(which incidentally was for something like "most active contributor"), but the thing was I didn't know that it actually happened.
I do know that she did offer it up, though I seem to remember it was so that it may in someway make some funds for the production of "The MFT Book".
Now wouldn't it be nice if that finally came about and dedicated in some way to her honour?
