Plants in BW
Andrew:
I think your subject is a good choice for getting into BW. You might want to take a look at the work of Edward Weston and his son.
The main problem I see with this image is DOF and this has nothing to with BW. The stuff in the foreground should be in focus or not there at all. Another problem is overall softness.
Both these problems might be mitigated by faster shutter and larger aperture. Use of a tripod or other support would help too.
