I have been in Northumberland for a few days and tried to take a decent shot of this castle for a friend of mine. It's his birthday soon and I want to give him a picture of one of his favourite places. Would REALLY appreciate comments and suggestions.

Thanks to Eugene, Dee Vee, Rob and Horst. I have reworked this image and have come up with this one. I think it's better now.

I like your image Adrian and in response to your request can say the following but prefaced by the principle that we all do our processing to individual taste. I like the composition and your general approach. I also love this lens and it gives the scene a lovely wide angle vista and impact. The shutter speed you have chosen works well in that the water is rendered really nice, to my eyes, that is, but perhaps a bit of camera shake that is ever so slightly visible in the rocks?

I would probably approach the processing here in a different furthering way. These are only my own approaches and do with them what you will.

I think it needs a bit more contrast and a working with the light across the image. My approach would be to make a number of different adjustment layers with curves, levels and contrast. I would then work on the layer masks with a very soft edged brush to remove local areas that are not suited to the end result at different opacities until I have what appears to be visually appealing to my taste. At the end of that I would flatten it and may or may not do some light burning and dodging to emphasize the light and shadow. Maybe try it out and if it doesnt work for you then you did a bit of experimenting which might be fun! and if it does work for you then that's a bonus ....

oh my ...this is a wonderful shot Adrian ...it has all the elements for a great shot ..i like how you laid low and captured those rocks at eye level , and the clouds are marvelous...now saying so, it can be improved like Eugene mentioned by carefully and selectively dodge and burn to bring out the contrast where the're differences in tones ... good stuff ;-))

Thanks very much Eugene. I really appreciate your comments. The picture does look a little flat but it needed you to point that out to me - as for the camera shake, you may be right. I have a few shots of this area though so may be able to improve matters. Dee Vee, thanks to you as well. I hope to post another shot of this area soon (taking your comments on board) and would be grateful for any more input.

Great raw material, Adrian.

I can only support comments by Eugene and dee vee. Nicely seen and composed. 1/10 is a good shutter for waves.

Yes ...

Much improved! I am pleased that you broke the (unwritten) rule of not placing the horizon line dead center. In this case it seems to work very well there. Nice to see a natural looking b&w and somewhat high contrast presentation. Nice performance...

I agree with the others. Very good indeed Adrian. I would only sugest a "green filter" aplication on the grass, i think the lighter green's would benefict your compo a lot, overall maybe i would give it a shadow/highlight PP in Photoshop to give it a "illusion" of more dinamic range extent. Best wishes!

Adrian, just popping in for a few seconds, guilty as usual about all I've been missing lately. It's so exciting to see you putting your 11-22 to such good use! I absolutely love the drama in this one, heightened by the spray of water on the foreground rocks. My eye is drawn right along the curve of the rocks to the castle, and even the clouds contribute their part to the wonderful mood of this. I bet your friend will be thrilled with this. I don't know what the previous iterations looked like, but this version is a treat.

Thanks everyone...

Thanks again to you Eugene for your comprehensive advice. That REALLY helped. Dee Vee, thanks for backing him up. Horst, appreciate your time. Rob, good to hear from you after a while - I have missed your contributions. Edwin, very generous rating. Thanks a lot. Joao, interesting advice. I will give that a try. Aaron - the original looked very like this but much less contrast, quite grey all over and the rocks were softer. I stole some rocks from another shot to sharpen them up a bit. Elisabeth, as always it's a treat to get a comment from you. Glad you liked it. There are a few more shots of this castle to come I'm afraid!

Adrian - when I saw this in its original state I thought that this would have been a throw away (for me at least). Dull and flat. What you have done here in pp is remarkable (especially the FG is amazing). Now this picture is really alive. I have to admire Eugene's, etc., vision when they noticed the potential of it. I would not have noticed it for sure. Klau

Adrian. Thanks very much for your feedback and very kind words. Glad I was able to be of some help. The image is so much more alive now with light and contrast and I like it very much indeed. Well done. I'll be away for awhile after tonight but will talk again!
