01 - The Regent

This is the first photo in a series on my city of Christchurch. I chose to use black and white for all the photos for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I haven't done a lot of B&W conversions, so this will be a good chance to get better. Secondly, it's the middle of winter here, and we're getting a lot of grey, gloomy days, which suits B&W photography.

Jeremy:
A bit of an unusual subject for you.
The large signs are very well done...good high contrast, sharp BW.
I think the composition might be stronger if you emphasized this and cropped on the left up to the big sign.
You might also consider lightenig up the top of the stairs / interior just a bit to reveal some detail.
Best wishes...
joe

Thank you very much for your comments Joe. Street photography is definitely something I haven't done a lot of. I'm using this series to explore the genre.
Thanks for the crop suggestion. Also makes sense to reveal a little more detail in the stairs. Cheers

I think the conversion is Excellent, with a capital E! I also happen to like the crop as-is. What I love about street photography is the story and the context of things, so I'm grateful to have the space (and little, interesting details) to the right and left of the theater stairs. I also like the way the stairs descend into complete darkness at the very top--makes me think of the mysterious "other" world inside.

Many thanks Elisabeth. This is perhaps our most iconic cinema - it's small and is located right beside the city centre. It has a lot more character than the bigger complexes.
