Crane Dance II

Crane Dance II
Copyright ©2009, Jens Birch HoF ¤ $

Friends, I have been away from this site for a couple of years but it caught my interest today because I learnt that I very recently was admitted to the HoF.

As I have become a bit tired recently of the gear-centered talk in most online fora, I decided to focus more on image making. So, since this wonderful community by tradition is more about the photos than the gear we use - why not give myself a re-start here? It will be interesting to see who still is around and who I haven't met before. (I notice that the login is as slow as it used to be...;-) )

Now...

I'll start sharing with you a couple of dancing eurasian cranes (Grus grus) from the great gathering of these majestic birds that occur each spring by the lake Hornborga here in Sweden.

Don't hesitate to make comments, remarks, or critiques if you feel for it - and it is also fine with me if you just want to give a simple appreciative comment :-)

Cheers, Jens.

Great to see you back Jens, I wondered what you've been up to these years! Congrats on the HoF. Just to get you started again with the MFT habit I'm rating your wonderful, dynamic wildlife shot quite highly!!

Good to have you back Jens and congrats on the HoF.

A beautiful shot of the cranes. I wouldn't want to see this in anything but colour, because I love the patch of red on their heads. I'm glad you have captured this without them overlapping. It is also great how their attention is completely on each other and they are not distracted by you.

My only critique is that I find that the photo is cropped too close on the left and top sides. Great photo. Cheers

Nigel

Thanks Nigel, let's hope for a second HoF entry then ;-)

The last years, I have been honing my wildlife photography skills - (as you may have seen on my smugmug site. Thanks for the comment over there by the way!)

Cheers, Jens.

Daniel

Thanks for the creative suggestions Daniel. I am, however, pretty hard to convince when it comes to converting wildlife photos to monochrome but I'll be fair and take your advice and see how it looks.

Cheers, Jens.

Paul

Thanks Paul, I'm glad you like it.

It is actually taken at 137 mm focal length. In fact, this is a perfect example of when the Big Bertha Zoom is the lens to choose. It was great to have the possibility to zoom out there to fit both cranes in the frame. (I would have kicked myself If I had been armed with a 300/2.8 in that situation.)

Cheers, Jens.

Jeremy

I'm happy to read what you like about the image - it coincides pretty much with my own assessment of the scene (not surprisingly).

The crop tightly to the left wing was made intentionally for the limited medium of the www - sacrificing a bit of space for more feather detail. The rest of the framing then gave itself by the limits of the image and because I wanted a 4:3 aspect ratio. I would probably leave the photo uncropped (adding some 10-15% to the left) for a large print.

Cheers, Jens.

Big Bertha

I agree I have myself a 300 2.8 and I must say I carry often a 50-500 Sigma for this purpose, Icopy a link on other Crane photos from a friend of mine she as shoot a lot you will see.

Good to see you

Is this one of your re-processed series?

Congrats on your HOF admittance.

Re: Big Bertha

It is ironic, it doesn't matter how good lenses one gets, there is always another 'must have' one in the next store which could fill the need in those 1% of situations not covered by what one already has.

Thanks for the link to your friend's crane images, they are nice! Interesting to see that they dance also at their winter quarters.

Cheers, Jens.

Hello Henk - good to see you too!

Lets focus on photography for a while ;-)

Actually, this is an image from a visit to the crane dance area in 2008 but I never bothered processing any of the images because I, at the time, was so disappointed by the E-3's AF-performance. As it happened, I revisited the directory on my hard drive last week and found several quite nice images. This is just one of them, I'll post some more later if you like.

Cheers, Jens.
