Anything could be possible in this age of consolidation and fierce competition; the Japanese giants have formed a consortium to manufacture LCDs together in order to minimize risks and cut cost.
I anticipate the same move in the digital camera realm where product differentiation is becoming less and less noticeable and the camera is becoming more like a commodity.
Combining / merging one's expertise and strengths may be the only way to survive; the smaller players like Pentax, Olympus, Fuji may not last for long being independent in this seemingly more and more cutthroat market.

Financial scandal
The financial scandal currently wracking Olympus Corporation makes me wonder how much ground did Olympus lose in the last decade by losing money that it really needed to invest in better technology. I'm sad and I feel that my current Olympus camera will be my last. Great lenses but, it seems, bodies without a great future.

The micro 4/3's is what is being focused upon by both companies. My next body also will not be an Oly nor Pana, but a Sony TLS.

I love the 4/3 Oly lenses but saw the writing on the wall a couple of years ago and went to a Nikon D700. Yet for travel, my E3 is so much lighter, smaller and easier with lenses to carry... I may buy the E5's replacement if one ever shows up just to keep my investment in my lenses if I don't think the E3 will get me there...
