All American Junk

This photo is not intented as a political or nationalistic statement. As with Tony in the door shot a few photos back, I thought a long time about posting given the high mixed world emotions over the USA's current foreign actions against terrorism. However, I think it's a great example of the capability of the E-1. I took this photo in an antique/junk shop in Monterey,CA. You will note that I; 1 - shot out of shadows; 2 - into light; 3 - back into shadows; 4 back into light with vivid colors at the end of the "tunnel". I burned the objects in the final shadow a bit to improve visibility.

Like this shot very much John

As far as the levelling the framing is concerned; the door does appear to off level but the lamp and the vertical line of the display case close to centre are on the 0/180 degree plane pretty well exactly. Even if the frame could be rotated a little more clockwise I would prefer to think the shop itself is out of plumb.

I assume you double developed or at least double levelled two copies of the original raw to achieve properly balanced light inside and out. I have never been able to get such a balance without it with the E1.

Cheers

Hi Peter - No, I have not mastered the layers function in PhotoShop Elements - I suspect that it may be more user friendly in PS, but I don't want to spend the bucks for the upgrde as PSE handles nearly all mey needs fine. This is one layer, a copy of the original RAW file. THX - john

John, this is a nice representation of what the E-1 can do! I have submitted three American flag shots since sumitting to MFT's and have not gotten a comment on any one of them. Tony is right about separating the Politics of a Nation and a persons love for their country. Was a little disapointed (thought they were decent pictures) that people would not comment on anything associated with an American flag even though I knew the state of American international affairs at the time.

John S - THX for that interesting insight. I spent some time overseas where I learned about the differing views of how America is perceived - both positively and negatively. It was a good experience and made me wiser.

It has all been said

As to the verticals, I suggest that EVERYONE BUY THE GRID FOCUS SCREEN! It is the best 50 bucks I have spent for the E-1. Have not had to rotate even one image since I got the thing and installed it.

As for the American Flag... It is a thing of beauty! Patriots need to show the flag in this country, especially those left of the radical and belligerent far right wing who think the symbol gives them special and exclusive rights.

I'll take a look at that grid screen Ed, I do have tendency to lose sight of my perpediculars when shooting. I agree with your flag comments also. It reminds me of the quote "Patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels."
