Well I tried to take all the wonderfull feedback i got on my original post (see link below), and try again. I have adjusted curves in the color image before doing the conversion. I think it helped quite a bit. I also messed around with a version where i increased the contrast which also turned out well. In the end however I decided to post the curves adjustment it seemed that there was a little more control doing it this way.
